This unique course will transform your work, providing a structured and informed approach to composition. It provides an invaluable process for any artist, using any media and working in any genre.
This is a schedule 6 week course, with new content available each week. You have the opportunity to share your work and interact with me and other students on the specialist course platform (not Facebook).
This is the perfect course to take alongside ANY of my other courses, but in particular URBAN EXPLORATIONS and APPROACHES TO ABSTRACTION.

WHAT IS THE AIM?
During the course you will fill a sketchbook! This will become a valuable resource you can return to for guidance and inspiration. By completing a series of practical activities you will discover what feels right and what doesn’t, and at what stage to act on that discovery.
WHAT MEDIA WILL WE USE?
We will use ink, acrylics and collage for the 25+ practical activities. But the course is suitable for artists who work in any media. In the past I have had artist who work in oils, textiles, photography and printmaking as well as acrylic painters. Here’s the supply list!
IS THIS FOR ABSTRACT ARTISTS?
Although I teach the principles and elements abstractly, they apply to any genre. All art deals with the same concepts of contrast, balance, unity and emphasis whether it is abstract, still life, landscape or figurative.
IS THERE INTERACTION?
YES! the course is on a specialist teaching platform and with each activity you can share your work, comment on other students posts and join in discussions. I am there every day of the scheduled 6 weeks joining in and answering questions.
There is no need for a facebook group… it is all contained within the course. After the six weeks you can carry on posting and chatting on the course as long as you like, when I run the course again it is in a new ‘classroom’

I limit numbers so that I can give you my individual attention. You have joined a class not a tribe! I do not employ ‘coaches’ as you have paid to be taught by an experienced and qualified tutor…..ME!

WHEN DOES THIS COURSE RUN?
As I limit numbers and this is a very popular course I run it twice a year. The course runs for six weeks.
IS THERE TUTOR INTERACTION?
I will be around to answer any questions EVERY DAY to join in discussions etc. On this course I do not provide a critique on individual students work. The aim of the course is for you to learn how to analyse your own work, to understand what is working or not and why. But you are not on your own, I will answer any questions you have and each activity has a forum where you can share your work with other students taking the course..
IS THERE AN ONLINE COMMUNITY?
Yes, all course participants have the option of sharing work they create within each module of the course. There you can share your work and ideas if you wish to do so and see work by other students.
CAN I PAY IN MY CURRENCY?
Of course! The payment is set in GDP as I am in the UK but when you pay it will convert to your own currency.
Payments are made via Stripe, a safe and secure payment platform, using a debit or credit card.
HOW DO I ACCESS THE COURSE?
You will be asked to register on the teaching platform Ruzuku. That is where the course lives.
HOW LONG SHOULD I EXPECT TO SPEND?
I have planned the course over 6 modules based on college course I ran when I was a professional teacher. As such expect to put aside 3 or 4 hours a week over six weeks to set up, watch the videos, join discussions and complete the tasks. But unlike an in-person workshop you get lifetime access to the content and can revisit it anytime!
WHAT HAPPENS AT THE END OF THE SIX WEEKS?
All the course content, comments and posts remains just as it is, you have lifetime access and can continue chatting and posting for as long as you like. Basically it’s just me who leaves the classroom! When I run the course again I copy the content over to a new class with a new group of students.
WHAT IS THE FORMAT?
The classes are delivered in video format via the online platform Ruzuku. There is also additional written content in the form of downloadable PDF’s
WHAT INTERNET CONNECTION WILL I NEED?
To get the most out of the class you need to have a high speed internet connection and newer computer or mobile device that is equipped to stream video off of the internet.
WHAT LEVEL ARE THE CLASSES?
The classes in this course are intermediate and are suitable for those who have some experience of making art. If you are unsure then email me sally@sallyhirst.co.uk
DO I NEED ALL OF THE SUPPLIES?
No, I encourage you to work with what you have and adapt the classes to suit your needs. I am all for mixing things up and experimenting with materials! There is a supply list available in advance for each course.
DO YOU OFFER REFUNDS?
With my scheduled courses if you feel they are not right for you I will refund you within a week of your booking/the course starting, (less an admin fee) or a full credit towards another class. I encourage you to fully read through the class details and contact me if you have any questions prior to signing up. If once you have started you feel it not for you then please email me to discuss at sally@sallyhirst.co.uk.
