Urban Explorations

Urban Explorations

Explore the surfaces, textures, signage and shapes of the urban environment.

A scheduled course designed for those with some experience who want to develop their skills and ideas further.

About this course

Excited by the textures of the city, the decay and the urban? Do you have experience of painting with acrylics but want a more thematic approach to move your work to the next level?

This annual online course will provide a structured and informed approach to the urban theme, whilst building your acrylic painting skills. I will guide you through the three stages of creating; COLLECT, CONSIDER and CREATE. During the course I show you how I create three paintings (see below), from the initial photographs and sketches, exploring composition and colours, building with textures and collage, right through to the final brushstrokes.

You will receive video tutorials with in-depth demonstrations giving you all the information you need, and you will have the opportunity to share your work and ideas, and interact with me and other students on the specialist course platform (not Facebook).

Course cost: £345

Urban Explorations

How will this workshop improve your painting?

I will show you how to explore the urban environment, to gather your resources, and then use them with collage and paint to build layers of ‘visual history’

By working on a series of paintings your creative skills will develop along with your confidence.  Working on several pieces simultaneously, leaves little time to worry about success or failure.

Incorporate a range of media; collage, ephemera, rust and mark making into your acrylic layers.. and then sand them down for those gorgeous textures!

You will be encouraged to  experiment with new tools, mediums, and techniques.

The sketches and the pieces you create will be unique to you and have an evocative  ‘sense of place’, giving you ideas for many more.

What this course is not!

Whilst I whilst I demonstrate my approach and techniques you will be encouraged to develop your own valuable resources and create work that is unique to you.

This is not an abstract painting course, your work can have both realistic and abstract elements! You decide what you want to include…

I will not be teaching drawing skills or perspective, there are plenty of YouTube videos to teach you illustration. I will however include a lot on how to use both acrylics and collage, plus few compositional tips and strategies to give your paintings structure.
